What is San Diego Teen Court?

Teen Court staff and volunteers visit high school classes throughout San Diego to teach students concepts of criminal law and about the juvenile justice system.  Students are also trained to serve as jurors, prosecuting attorneys, defense attorneys, bailiffs and court clerks.  Teaching the principles of Restorative Justice and ways to repair the harm to the community are also important parts of this training.

How does Teen Court work?

Teen Court visits local high schools to train students to serve as jurors, bailiffs, attorneys and clerks for juvenile sentencing hearings. During training, students are taught about the juvenile justice system and principles of restorative justice.

How successful is Teen Court?

Each year Teen Court trains hundreds of high school students that impose binding sentences on dozens of first-time offenders.  Less than 8% of Teen Court offenders commit a second crime within two years after appearing in Teen Court, and more than 90% of youth volunteers and parents report that they believe Teen Court is an effective tool for preventing juvenile delinquency.
