Programs
Teen Court offers two versions of offender sentencing hearings
– the Student Attorney Session and the Peer Jury Panel. Teen Court
also holds both daytime and evening sessions.
Student Attorney Sessions
In addition to serving as jurors, high school students also serve as
Prosecuting Attorneys and Defense Attorneys in these sessions. The
roles of court clerk and bailiff are also filled by students. Real cases of actual juvenile
offenders are heard in the Student Attorney Sessions, and student
jurors impose binding sentences that are recognized by Juvenile
Court. Adult volunteer attorneys work directly with student
attorneys to develop opening statements, questions for witnesses
that testify and closing statements. Student attorneys also describe
a recommended sentence to jurors.
Peer Jury Panels
This session does not include student attorneys, and is less formal
than a courtroom hearing. A Peer Jury Panel is a jury of students
that have a direct conversation with the offender and a parent about
the offense and circumstances involved. After the jury questions
witnesses, deliberations take place and a verdict is
rendered.
Day Sessions
Teen Court staff and volunteers teach juvenile law and criminal law
principles in high school government, civics and social studies
classes throughout San Diego. Student attorney training takes place
on subsequent visits after the first curriculum is presented, and
then the entire class will appear in San Diego Superior Court on a
Friday morning for a Student Attorney Session.
Evening Sessions
Students can participate in Teen Court multiple times as jurors,
attorneys, bailiffs and court clerks in evening sessions that are
offered twice each month. Both Student Attorney Sessions and
Peer Jury Panels are conducted in evening sessions. Please check our calendar for dates and
times.
