Attorneys and Law Students

  Trains high school students to serve as attorneys for hearing sessions. Attorney trainers teach students to prepare opening and closing statements, question witnesses, and serve as effective advocates for the offender, the victim and the community.
 
Time Required:
Attend 1 or 2 training sessions –
1.5 hours each session

Be available to students –
less than 1 hour/week for 2 weeks

Attend hearing session –
1-3 hours per session
  Preside over Teen Court hearing sessions. Question witnesses and approve and sign Sentencing Forms from jury.
 
Time Required:
Attend hearing session -
2-3 hours per session
 

Please note: to serve as an attorney trainer, you do not need to practice criminal law, or be a litigator. Attorneys from all practices are welcome to serve in those roles.

Time requirements may vary; our estimates are based on the averages for our volunteers.

 


 

Non-Attorneys

Assists the defendant with completion of his or her sentence. Must agree to monitor at least 10 defendants. Must successfully pass a criminal history background check.
 
Time Required:
Attend the hearing session –
1-3 hours per session

Regular contact with the defendant –
½-hour or less per week for 45-60 days.
  Interprets to families during court proceedings. Spanish speaking interpreters highly desirable.
 
Time Required:
Attend the hearing session –
1-3 hours per session
  Will transcribe Teen Court proceedings into written form in order to produce official transcripts. Ideal for students who are currently enrolled in a court reporting program and would like to gain experience.
 
Time Required:
Attend the hearing session –
